Are dental implants painful?

You may be ready for a permanent solution that looks and feels natural in the mouth, or have been recommended to get dental implants. Implants provide long lasting results compared to other dental alternatives, and feel comfortable, allowing you to eat and enjoy everything you would with natural teeth.

At Brenner Dental Care we help our patients achieve the smile they desire by meeting with them, and evaluating their teeth and concerns. Once we determine patients are a good candidate for implants, we create their customized treatment plan. Patients that have missing, cracked, or broken teeth are usually good candidates for implants.

Overall, the implant procedure is not painful. Many patients say that having a tooth pulled is more painful compared to their dental implant procedure. Local anesthesia is used throughout the entire process to keep our patients relaxed and at ease every step of the way. The anesthesia numbs the gums and surrounding areas, so the procedure is not painful at all. The dental implant procedure can take a few months from start to finish depending on how much work is needed and if a bone graft is required.

Patients must have adequate bone to support the implants.  Bone grafts can be done to take bone from another area, or use synthetic bone material to provide additional support around the jaw. A good part of the healing time is to allow the bone and jaw to heal with new bone growth.

After the procedure you may have the following:

  • Pain at and around the implant site
  • Bruising or swelling of the gums or face
  • Minor bleeding that should subside

The recovery process after a dental implant procedure is between 4-6 months. Most patients can return to normal activity and tasks the next day. We recommend taking antibiotics and pain relievers to help with the recovery. If patients notice any swelling or pain that gets worse, we encourage them to contact our office immediately. Soft foods are recommended as the areas heal, and we want patients to avoid any hard foods and products that would stain the teeth.

Overall, the pain associated with a dental implant procedure can be kept to a minimum. Good oral hygiene is a great way to keep the dental implant area and teeth looking and feeling healthy, and free of infection.
